Here at Move It or Lose It Inc. we try to make every aspect of your move easy and as non stressful
as possible. Many moving companies and real estate agents say
that you should begin working on your moved at least two months beforehand.
We have put up a guide to try to help make everything go smoothly in your move.
Eight weeks before your move:
- Make an inventory of everything you have. You can decide what gets packed in the truck, and what you may want to take in the car.
- If you have already seen your new home then you can start planning where you want your furniture placed. The movers know the couch goes into the livingroom but you can have a plan of what wall it goes against will help things go more smoothly for you.
- If you have children then you will want to start preparing their items for the move. You want to start transferring your childrens school records to their new school and get vaccination records from your pediatrician.
- Decide if you are going to do your own packing or hire help. If your doing it yourself start getting boxes and packing tape. You can start packing out-of-season clothing and other items you will not need right away.
- Start taking care of paperwork. Fill out your change of address cards available at the post office. Notify your bank and insurance agent or any other companies that will need an updated address. Send change of address messages to any magazines that you subscribe to. The post office will only forward magazines for 60 days.
- Arrange to have utilities cut off and switched to your new home. It is best to put the cut off date a few days after your schedule moved just in case of a mishaps or last minute schedule change.
- Start working your way through the house packing one room at a time.
- If you have children that are younger you may want to find someone to help you watch over them for the day of your move and get that all planned out.
- If your moving into or out of a building with several floors, you may want to check to see if you are able to reserve the freight elevator for moving day.
- Arrange to move your plants and any pets that you may have.
- Dispose of any items that your not allowed to move such as gasoline or propane.
- Keep packing.
- Start planning for your moving help.
- If making a long distance move, make sure to start opening your new bank accounts or switching addresses if staying with the same bank. Cancel your newspaper at your old residence.
- If you are on medication, make sure you have enough to last through your move or check with your doctor to get another prescription.
- Drain gas and oil from the lown mower and other power equipment you'll be moving.
- Finally finish packing.
- Arrange to have someone there to oversee the move and to answer any questions the movers may have.
- Have beds stripped and ready to go.
- Let the moving crew disassemble things like beds that need it if you have not done so.
- Be sure to give your mover the address or directions to your new home.
